Detailed Procedure for Obtaining a Business Operating Permit
- Business Registration: Ensure your business is registered with the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) and obtain a Certificate of Incorporation or Certificate to Commence Business.
- Application Letter: Write an official letter to the District/Municipal Chief Executive stating the name, type, location of the business and add below required documents: .
- Required Documents: Gather supporting documents, which typically include:
- Registrar General’s Business Certificate
- Ghana Card / Tax Identification Number (TIN)
- Business Location Plan or GPS address
- Other necessary certification (e.g., Fire Service Certificate, EPA certificate, Ghana Standard Board)
- Submission & Inspection: Submit the application to the The District Assembly. The District Assembly’s inspection team will inspect your premises, usually within five business days, to verify suitability and conduct a search at The Registrar General’s Department to validate the Business Certificate and the business name.
- Payment & Issuance: A bill is generated based on the Fee Fixing Resolution. Upon payment at the assembly’s finance office, a Receipt and the permit Certificate are issued within another five business days.
NOTE:
- Validity: The permit is typically valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
- Transferability: A business operating permit is not transferable. A new owner must apply for a new permit. It is also valid within the said District Assembly’s Jurisdictions only.
- Compliance: Operating without a valid permit can result in the closure of the business by the Municipal Assembly.
- Fees: Fees vary depending on the location, size, and type of business.
