BIAKOYE DISTRICT PROFILE

The Biakoye District Assembly was carved out of the former Jasikan District in 2007. It was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 1910 on 1st of November, 2007. The district was inaugurated in March, 2011. The capital is Nkonya Ahenkro, which is about 70 kilometers from Ho, the regional capital and about 185 kilometers from Accra, the National Capital.

The District is located in the middle part of the Volta Region and lies within longitude 00 15’ E and 00 45’ E and latitude 60 45’ N and 70 15’ N. It shares boarders with the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and Jasikan Districts Assembly to the east, Kpando Municipal District to the south, Kadjebi and Krachi East Districts to the North and the Volta Lake to the west.

Major Agricultural Activities

Food crops are produced mainly by peasant farmers using simple hand tools. The average land holding per farmer is about 0.5 ha.

VISION FOR BIAKOYE DISTRICT

The District Chief Executive for Biakoye, Hon Millicent Carboo welcomes you and all investors into the Distrct.
Her vision as the District Chief Executive is to bring development to her citizens and improve their living conditions.
Her area of interest includes Health, Agriculture, Industry, Education among others.
On Health, the DCE wants every village to have access to health care delivery at their doorstep and that she is poised to build CHIPS compounds across the District and supply the necessary equipments to facilitate good healthcare delivery.
As part of her vision to enhance quality healthcare delivery, she has already offered three thousand, three hundred (3300) National Health Insurance Scheme ( NHIS) opportunity to those who because of financial constraints did not register to join the National Health Insurance Scheme to register free of charge.
In the area of Agriculture, the DCE wants the farmers to migrate from subsistence farming to commercial farming and to achieve that, she has plans to secure modern farming implements such as Tractors, Combined Harvesters, irrigation equipments and others to replace the obsolete farming equipments the farmers are using now.

In Education, the Hon DCE is poised to promote the girl child Education.She has therefore planned to embark on outreach program to visit the schools and communities to sensitize people about the need to get the girl child educated and also supports the girl child financially by instituting a girl child endowment fund to facilitate the girl child education.
She also has the intention to lobby for the District to benefit from the one District one Factory initiative so that the youth can be employed.
In all, these and many others are the vision for the District Chief Executive, Hon Millicent Carboo to uplift the standard of living for her people in the District.

TOURISM IN BIAKOYE DISTRICT

There are a number of sites which could be developed to attract tourists to the District. Historical sites including tombs of some unknown Germans who died during the colonial period and shrines are found at Nkonya areas ( Ahenkro, Tepo, Bumbulla) and other communities of the District.

Some of the shrines also function as healing homes and centres for the preparation of traditional medicine. The Kabo Forest Reserve, Monkey Sanctuary Island at Adzamansu, Volcanic Lake at Tayi and the Volta Lake also serve as source of attraction to tourists.
